propolis

Beehive Products - Bee Propolis

Deciduous tree bark and leaves are collected by the worker bees. They combine it with their own secretions to form a glue-like mixture known as propolis. It is used quite liberally around the beehive to repair cracks in the hive walls. It is used to protect the inside of the hive from harmful bacteria.

People taking propolis do so for its natural healing, anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. To this end propolis is used as a supplement but is also extensively used as a tincture which can be applied directly to the skin. People apply it directly to cold sores and blisters, skin burns and rashes. It has even appeared in the dental hygiene world, both as a toothpaste ingredient and in the form of gum. People use propolis throat sprays where its anti-bacterial properties may provide relief from sore throats.

Rich in bioflavonoids, propolis may help in healing and mending blood vessels and resisting the release of histamine. Bioflavonoids are researched as having particular benefit to high blood pressure, respiratory infections and liver conditions. More recently, research has shown that propolis may prevent or retard the growth of certain types of cancerous cells in the human body. (research at Columbia University) - we don't know whether there are any definitive findings in this direction, but the fact that the research has been conducted in the first instance would seem to suggest that the medical community are taking propolis very seriously.
