What Are “Bee Products” and what do you look for when buying them?

Bee products, or ‘honeybee’ products include royal jelly, bee pollen, bee propolis and honey. These are substances produced by the honeybee and removed from the hive for consumption as nutritional supplements or food supplements. These products have been used for centuries by man to improve health, generate energy and stave off illness and infection.
Bee products are packed with vitamins, minerals and essential amino acids. They are rich in bioflavonoids and may provide us with a multitude of benefits.

What to look for when buying bee products.

The baby boomer generation are active in purchasing supplements, lotions and potions to help maintain a youthful appearance and active lifestyle. Often, supplement and skin care products can cost many hundreds of dollars each month and may have little or no tangible benefit to the user. We feel that level of expenditure is mostly unnecessary and is often the result of aggressive marketing techniques which lure people with the promise of extended life-cycles and young-for-ever appearance. Bee products contain much more in nutritional terms than the vast majority of health supplements on the market, and their associated benefits to the immune system make place them in the elite few products that really could make a difference.

Here are some guidelines when shopping around -

1 – Some people buy single bee products like royal jelly or bee pollen. This is fine, however, a better alternative in our opinion is to use ‘combination’ bee products that contain ‘ALL FOUR’ beehive products in one capsule, not just 2 or 3. According to Rita Elkins MH, author of the best selling beehive book “Healing from the Hive” – a ‘special synergy exists when taking all four products from the beehive together’. This makes good sense when you examine the nutritional content of each of the four beehive substances. Only when combining all four do you receive the full spectrum of nutrition. Products that combine all four beehive substances include ‘Total Bee Plus’

2 – The next comparison should be ‘potency’. By this we mean the amount of ‘active ingredient’ that you receive per capsule. From 4 capsules of “Total Bee Plus” you will receive the following ingredients:
Royal Jelly – 2400mg Bee Pollen – 1600mg Bee Propolis – 800mg Honey – 200mg

3 – Next – compare the number of capsules per bottle. Products like ‘Total Bee Plus’ provide excellent value, containing 120 capsules per bottle. These are not ‘bovine’ or animal derived gelatin that most suppliers use. They are vegetable derived capsules – 120 per bottle for at least a one month supply.

4 – Next is quality. Look for products that are produced from the finest raw material available and in licensed and regulated facilities. There are many bee keepers around that try to package their own product and sell them directly to the public. This may be possible with honey, which is a substance that is easy to handle and has natural preservative properties, but it is NOT generally possible with a substance like royal jelly, which decomposes very quickly and is prone to contamination.

Also, there are many companies importing bulk royal jelly products that have already been capsulated, mostly from China. These products can be sold inexpensively, however, they are completely unregulated and could be harmful to your health. Royal Jelly is a volatile substance and it needs to be handled and processed correctly. It needs to be processed within 1/2 hours of leaving the beehive. It then needs to be checked for contaminants and potency directly before encapsulation. When companies import bulk, capsulated royal jelly product from China, it cannot be checked for potency and contaminants as it is already in capsule form. It is not uncommon for the product to contain much less active ingredient than is stated on the label, with the product weight made up by fillers and chemical preservatives.

That is why you should buy your royal jelly products from companies whom you can trust, companies that process their royal jelly here in the USA and do so in licensed and regulated facilities, according to eGMP standards. Products like our fresh freeze-dried royal jelly and ‘Total Bee Plus’ have not been ‘mixed in a bucket’ out in the yard. They are high potency, fresh, pure products, free from contaminants and unwanted chemicals.

5 – The next consideration is price. If you are looking for bee products, particularly ones that contain royal jelly, you must be very careful when considering price. These substances do not grow on trees, nor are they vegetable roots that can be pulled out of the ground quickly and easily. The process of collecting the hive substances is very elaborate and time consuming. So when you see a product that contains 120 capsules, and is only $10.00 – be concerned that this is a genuine product that is exactly as described on the label – in many cases it may not be. As mentioned in section 4 above, many companies use low grade, low potency imports that may not contain what is described on the label. Furthermore they may be contaminated and in some instances, harmful to your health.

Fresh vs Freeze-Dried Royal Jelly, what is the difference and which is best?
Fresh liquid royal jelly contains approximately 67% water and must be kept refrigerated or frozen. Like any other product containing that amount of water, it is perishable and has a shelf life of about one year if refrigerated.
Freeze-drying, also known as lyophilizing, is a dehydration process which removes the water from a substance by exposure to dry, freezing air. No heat or chemicals are involved. Lyophilized royal jelly is a freeze-dried powder in which all the nutrients of fresh royal jelly are still present. In this state it can be stored at room temperature and thus has more uses and a longer shelf life, three years.

Certain ‘marketing’ companies try to make the case that freeze dried royal jelly is somehow inferior to liquid royal jelly with its 67% water. This is not the case. If the freeze-drying process is somehow ‘harmful’ why do these companies ship their liquid royal jelly in frozen form? – Don’t be duped into spending hundreds of dollars on products that are sold on television, whose primary focus is attractive packaging. Many of these products are low-potency and have insufficient active ingredient to make a positive difference to your health. Because of the high cost of TV advertising, these products are sold at up to 5 times more than their actual worth.
The finest Royal Jelly is freeze-dried, with all its nourishment and benefits ‘locked-in’ for the duration of its shelf life – other types of Royal Jelly are perishable and the potency/benefit diminishes with normal storage.

You should also understand that some suppliers (not us) supply you with pasteurized royal jelly. Obviously they generally do not disclose that fact, but it happens nevertheless. Learn more about pasteurized royal jelly here

Always Insist on -
No Chemicals – No Preservatives – No Heat – Maximum potency – Maximum freshness
