Natural Approaches for dealing with
allergies and food sensitivities. The book has a useful section on
'children and allergies' and talks briefly about hyperactivity,
bedwetting and testing methods.
The book relates to Dr. Marshall
Mandell's work as an expert in the field of allergies, he outlines a
number of symptoms in children which are attributed to allergies.
They include (partial list taken from book):
- dyslexia
- flushing
- irritability
- anger
- restlessness
- headache
- fatigue
- withdrawn attitude
Causes of allergies: "Allergic
reactions can be caused by certain foods, pollens, pet danders, dust
mites and insect venoms.....while the exact reason why a certain
individual becomes allergic to the substances mentioned above
remains unclear and somewhat controversial, heredity is a major
determining factor....."
The author goes on to state
that:
Allergies can include one or a
combination of the following symptoms (partial list from book):
- Hives
- Itchy swollen palms
- skin rashes
- sneezing
- asthma
- diarrhea (especially in infants)
The book lists common herbs that
are useful for allergies, including:
- Ephedra/Ma Huang
- Echinacea
- Bee Pollen
- Garlic
- Golden Seal
and many more listed.
Of bee pollen the author says:
"Bee pollen can help to gradually modify allergic reactions to
pollens and build immunity....."
The author also mentions
bioflavonoids as substances found in the white part of citrus rinds
and also in some vitamin C supplements. The author does not mention
that bee propolis contains 500 more bioflavonoids (vitamin P) than
is found in oranges!
The Natural Shopper Says: We found
this to be a useful book but also gleaned a good deal of allergy
related information from 'Healing from the Hive' - another popular
book in our range. Healing from the Hive focuses more on bee
products and also natural supplements and herbals that compliment
bee products. Healing from the Hive says about bee pollen and
allergies: "Developing an actual immunity against allergies is
exactly what many experts believe bee pollen can accomplish."
..."When we encounter an allergen, our immune system produces
more histamine which causes and inflammatory response, ie itchy,
watery eyes, red, swollen nose etc. Laboratory tests have found that
bee pollen can inhibit this response, thereby decreasing the
miserable symptoms that sometimes accompany an allergic
reaction" Read more about bee
products in Healing from the Hive.
