Bee Products and
Amino Acids
As discussed in previous
chapters, bee products are rich in amino acids,
proteins, globulins and peptones. Amongst these are:-
Tryptophan, Leucine, Lysine, Isoleucine, Methionine,
Cystiene, Thresonine, Arginine, Phenylalanine, Histidine,
Valine, Glutamic acid,
Tyrosine, Glycine, Serine, Proline, Alanine, Aspartic
acid, Hydroxyproline, Butyric acid.
Amino acids are the basic
building blocks of life, essential to our very
existence. When we examine the various properties and
associated benefits of each of the key amino acids, we
start to form a clearer picture as to why bee products
may be so beneficial to our health.
Let us take a ‘reference
style’ look at these basic elements of life that are
abundantly present in bee products, and look at some
findings from recent medical studies:
TRYPTOPHAM:
A natural relaxant, helps
alleviate insomnia by inducing normal sleep; reduces
anxiety & depression; helps in the treatment of
migraine headaches; helps the immune system; helps
reduce the risk of artery & heart spasms; works with
Lysine in reducing cholesterol levels.
Tryptophan, an essential amino
acid present in most protein foods.
Tryptophan as an amino
supplement has been used by millions of people for many
years and has been established as a safe and effective
product.
The benefits associated with
Tryptopham are commonly stated as:
-
Mood enhancement and
feelings of well-being
-
Stress reduction and the
promotion of calmness, serenity, relaxation, and
concentration.
-
Natural anti-depressant
effects.
-
Augments light therapy for
depression.
-
A natural sleep aid.
-
An anti-anxiety agent.
-
May inhibit aggressive
behavior.
-
Reduces carbohydrate
cravings, thus aiding blood sugar control &
weight loss.
-
Reduces symptoms of PMS.
-
With fibromyalgia, reduces
the number of tender points, anxiety, pain intensity
& improves quality of sleep.
-
Aids in general chronic
pain syndromes.
LYSINE:
Lysine is one of the essential
amino acids. It is found in abundance in your muscles,
however your body cannot generate its own Lysine,
meaning you must get it from your diet.
Recent studies have shown that
Lysine may be effective against herpes by improving the
balance of nutrients that reduce viral growth. A
deficiency may result in tiredness, inability to
concentrate, irritability, bloodshot eyes, retarded
growth, hair loss , anemia and reproductive problems.
Prolonged stressful situations
increase our requirements for Lysine and it is important
in the formation of collagen (the protein that forms the
matrix of your bone, cartilage & connective tissue).
Research indicates lysine
supplements (supplements which include bee products) may
enhance intestinal absorption of calcium and reduce the
passage of calcium in the urine.
The benefits associated with
Lysine are commonly stated as:
-
Use in prevention &
treatment of osteoporosis.
-
May aid bone healing from
injury.
-
May prevent or decrease
the severity of any viral flare-up.
-
May helps with skin health
& elasticity.
-
May prevent or decrease
the severity of genital herpes outbreaks.
-
May build muscle and
connecting tissue.
METHIONINE:-
Methionine is one of the
essential sulfur amino acids. As with other amino’s,
you do not create your own so you must ingest it for
survival. Methionine contributes to the formation of
important compounds in your body and works as a sulfur
donor to aid in your body's detoxification processes. It
may help prevent disorders of the hair, skin and nails;
and helps to lower cholesterol levels by increasing the
liver's production of lecithin; reduces liver fat and
protects the kidneys.
Methionine also plays a key
role in regulating the availability of folic acid.
Also of significance is the
fact that allergic (high histamine) persons tend to be
methionine deficient, and so supplementation may be
particularly important in this category of people as a
mechanism for lowering blood histamine levels.
The benefits associated with
Methionine are commonly stated as:
-
May improve healing from
surgery & other wounds.
-
May be helpful in
combating depression.
-
May be helpful for
alcoholism.
-
May be useful with
allergies & asthma.
-
May be beneficial against
the toxic effects of radiation.
-
May be useful for the high
histamine type of schizophrenia - is most useful in
those schizophrenics who are depressed.
-
Liver disorders.
-
May reduce withdrawal
symptoms & depression from heroin, barbiturate,
or amphetamine reduction.
-
Antioxidant therapy.
CYSTEINE:-
Cysteine can be obtained from
dietary and is depleted by cigarette smoking, the
depletion of which may be partially related to the
faster aging of skin in smokers.
Cysteine is a major component
of skin, hair, & fingernails. Studies show that
cysteine supplementation can increase hair shaft
diameter and hair growth density in some cases of hair
loss.
Cysteine functions as an
antioxidant and is a powerful aid to the body in
protecting against radiation and pollution. It can help
slow down the aging process, deactivate free radicals,
neutralize toxins; aids in protein synthesis and
presents cellular change. It is necessary for the
formation of the skin, which aids in the recovery from
burns and surgical operations.
The benefits associated with
Methionine are commonly stated as:
-
Help with skin health.
-
Stop hair loss & aid
hair growth.
-
Aid wound healing from
injuries, burns, or surgery.
-
Help protect us from the
adverse effects of alcohol consumption, cigarette
smoking, & other chemicals.
-
Support the liver when
there are liver disorders.
-
Enhance absorption of
iron.
-
Ameliorate chemical
sensitivity reactions.
-
Promote the production of
red & white blood cells.
-
Support cartilage (as a
precursor to chondroitin sulfate.)
HISTIDINE:-
Histidine is an essential
amino acid and is delivered mostly from our diets.
Histidine has
anti-inflammatory properties and is the only amino acid
found to be consistently low in the blood of those with
rheumatoid arthritis.
The benefits associated with
Histidine are commonly stated as:
-
Enhances wound healing,
-
Is essential for tissue
growth & repair.
-
Is helpful with rheumatoid
arthritis.
-
Is important for red blood
cell health. Deficiency will cause decreased
hemoglobin & hematocrit, ultimately leading to
anemia.
-
Helps store glucose in
your liver.
GLUTAMINE:-
Glutamine plays a key role in
the metabolism, and the gastrointestinal tract. It is
the primary energy source for the cells that line your
intestines and is essential to keeping them healthy.
Considered also to a "Brain food" by improving
mental capacities, it may also help speed the healing of
ulcers and lower fatigue.
The benefits associated with
Glutamine are commonly stated as:
-
Chronic fatigue or general
energy booster.
-
Depression.
-
Poor memory, focus,
concentration.
-
Blood sugar instability.
-
Alcoholism - helps to
decrease the craving for alcohol.
-
To detoxify ammonia &
other poisonous waste products in your body.
-
Stress tolerance.
-
Muscle support &
building - especially with prolonged exercise or for
athletes & body builders.
-
Improving mental fatigue.
-
Gastrointestinal
disorders.
-
Ulcers.
-
To protect against the
side effects of & to increase the benefits of
cancer chemotherapy & radiation treatment.
-
Helps make DNA (cellular
genetic material)
TYROSINE:-
Tyrosine is significant due to
its ability to convert to the mood elevating
neurotransmitters, norepinephrine and dopamine, in the
brain and may thus help with depression.
Tyrosine may convert to
thyroid hormone and to adrenaline which is produced by
your adrenal gland in response to stress.
The benefits associated with
Tyrosine are commonly stated as:

hereditary factors are influential.
A Closing Note About Bee
keeping
Beekeeping, or apiculture, is
the term used to describe the cultivation of colonies of
honeybees.
Bees are bred for commercial
purposes and can be a lucrative business, both in terms
of the nutritious products they produce and the value of
the bees themselves.
Most beekeepers produce honey
and beeswax, breed bees for sale, and offer beekeeping
supplies and equipment. Other beekeepers extend the
production from the hive to include Royal Jelly and
Propolis, both of which require more time, effort and
investment.
Lorraine Langstroth first
introduced Beekeeping here in the United States in 1851.
The comparative ‘youth’ of
the beekeeping industry here in the US might offer some
explanation as to why it has taken so long for the
medical industry to embrace bee products for their
undoubted medical and therapeutic benefits.
Many of us do not realize that
beehives are not maintained solely for the
purpose of extracting nutritive substances. Crop farmers
keep bees to pollinate their crops, and over 50% of
commercial crops in the US rely on pollination by bees.
There are many types of
flowers that vie for the bee's attention and bees are
very selective about the types of pollens that they will
forage, generally avoiding plants that have been sprayed
with pesticides.
